Actor Cuba Gooding Jr. filing for divorce

Maryland fans of the actor Cuba Gooding Jr. may have heard that he filed for divorce from his wife Sara Kapfer. Three years earlier, Kapfer filed for separation from him

The two married in 1994 after being together since high school, and they have three children. Gooding has asked for physical custody of their daughter, who is 10, and to share legal custody. He has also offered to pay spousal support but has asked to keep the money he has earned since the separation.

Kapfer's original separation filing cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. However, in 2016, Gooding suggested on a TV show that the two might get back together. In March of that year, he said he had taken Kapfer out on a date and that sometimes marriages took breaks.

Sometimes, as in this case, the end of a marriage is a long process. In such a case, a person might want to keep assets they have accumulated during separation as is the case with Gooding. Sometimes, a couple can negotiate an agreement about division of property and child custody. One parent may have primary physical custody while they share legal custody as Gooding has requested in this case. Shared legal custody refers to the decision-making power both parents have regarding issues such as the child's health care, education and religious upbringing. Parents might also want to draw up a parenting agreement that addresses their plans for the child in these areas as well in other areas such as extracurricular activities. Parents should endeavor to use the court's standard of making decisions in the child's best interests.
