Developing an effective parenting plan

Maryland parents who are ending their marriage might think that they only need to worry about co-parenting until their children turn 18. However, in reality, parents may continue to have some connection with one another throughout their lives as their children grow up and have children of their own. By starting early with a solid parenting plan, parents may be better able to navigate the decades ahead.

Prenup issues and preparations

The best time for a Maryland couple to think through the terms of a prenuptial agreement is well before the wedding is to take place. An agreement that is not clearly understood could result in serious conflicts if a divorce occurs. Because the rights of both partners are affected in a prenup, a good understanding of its implications is important before signing.

Learning about divorce from celebrity splits

Maryland couples who are divorcing may find that they are overwhelmed with well-meaning advice. While it is best not to put too much stock in anecdotes from others, there are lessons that can be learned from celebrity breakups. For example, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner chose the day after their 10th anniversary to announce their divorce. After 10 years of marriage, a lower-earning spouse may be able to make a claim for Social Security on their former spouse's earnings history. There may also be military or other state benefits. For Affleck and Garner, the timing was probably related to something in a prenuptial agreement.

How to prepare for divorce court

Maryland residents who are facing the end of their marriage may end up in a family law court if one or more divorce legal issues can not be resolved. It can be helpful to prepare in advance for what to expect and what strategies should be used or avoided.
