Building a healthy future after filing for divorce

Building a healthy future for yourself as a single adult begins as soon as you file for divorce. There are essentially two major challenges that you will face in pursuit of this goal during the divorce process. First, you and your attorney must work to ensure that the terms of your divorce settlement will support your healthy future. Second, you must work on a practical level to ensure that you are physically, emotionally, mentally and financially preparing for a healthier future as the divorce process progresses.

The terms of your divorce settlement will likely impact your future in dramatic ways. The breakdown of your property division and the terms of your child custody arrangement will help to determine what your life will look like immediately following the finalization of your divorce. If you battle over insignificant matters or if you ignore the process for any reason, you may compromise your ability to emerge from the divorce process in a financially sound way.

In addition, it is important to process the emotions and practical changes that your divorce has inspired. If you stick your head in the sand, you will compromise your ability to live a healthy life after your divorce is finalized. Taking good care of yourself, taking time to grieve and paying attention to pressing everyday responsibilities will help to ensure that you do not become so overwhelmed that you are inspired to make destructive or rash decisions.

You may understandably feel exhausted and uninspired to make these efforts right now. However, your future self will almost certainly thank you if you push through your resistance and embrace these efforts anyway.
